In an interview with sky sports, Liverpool Attacker Cody Gakpo has revealed that manchester united They were in contact with him for a transfer ahead of his move to the Merseyside giants.
The 24-year-old was one of the most sought-after players during his time at PSV Eindhoven and Man United were linked with him during the 2022 summer transfer window. There was constant talk that they could secure his signature, but the club decided not to negotiate an agreement with PSV.
Just a few months later, Gakpo ended up moving to Liverpool in a surprise winter transfer. It was suggested that United approach to get it, but the Reds hijacked the move out of nowhere. They reached an agreement to sign Gakpo at the end of December for a package of £45 million.
Gakpo has now revealed that United have been in contact regarding a summer transfer in 2022 and have spoken to the manager. He added that no deal was reached and that Liverpool came later with a winter proposal: “I think it was the summer before (I joined Liverpool) when I was in contact with the club (United).
“I spoke to the manager (Erik ten Hag) of them too, obviously, he's Dutch, so yeah, I talked to him too. But in the end it didn't come to fruition and that's it. In winter Liverpool arrived. The best decision for me.”

Gakpo said in his interview that signing for Liverpool was the best decision and he is obviously right. The Reds had a difficult 2022/23 season in which they finished fifth in the table, but are back in contention for the title this season. The Merseyside giants are currently 4 points clear at the top of the league table.
The Dutchman has had mixed performances, but has still impressed with 18 goals and 8 assists in 63 outings. His ability to play different positions has worked well for him. Gakpo has predominantly played as a striker for the Reds, but he has also played on either wing or in central midfield.
United, for their part, are going through a difficult season and are currently sixth in the table and face the tough challenge of qualifying for the Champions League. Looking at his current status, Gakpo will feel that he has made the right decision by joining his arch-rivals, who could end the season with first division glory.
