cool blues Gianfranco Zolawho scored 80 goals in more than 300 games for the club, was in the stands to watch Palmer weave his magic.

Given Zola's remarkable ability with the ball at his feet and his eye for a perfect pass, Palmer was asked after the game about comparisons with the Italian.

But the England international's amusing response gave fans an interesting insight into how much, or how little, he knows about the club's history.

“I know that Gianfranco Zola is an icon in fifa so it must have been good,” Palmer told Sky Sports.

“To be honest, I didn't really see him play. Everyone says he was a great player, so thanks (for the comparison).

To be fair to Palmer, he was born just a few months before Zola's final season at Stamford Bridge, which was the 2002/03 campaign.

But that didn't stop fans from mocking Palmer's comment.

One follower said: “At least he's not lying lol.”

Another posted: “This can't be real,” along with three laughing emojis.

One fan added: “Knowing him as a FIFA icon is crazy.”

In fact, Palmer met Zola, who presented the player with his PFA Young Player of the Year award in August.

Although Palmer may not know much about Zola's career, the Italian is well aware of the young man's greatness.

Before the match, Zola praised the “very special” Chelsea star.

“When he gets the ball he already knows what he wants to do next,” Zola said.

“It's a quality that only a few players have.”

Palmer's goal against Newcastle took his offensive contributions to seven goals and five assists in nine games this season.

With such a bright start, it's no wonder some Chelsea fans are already hoping he can replicate the dazzling form he showed last season, when Palmer scored 22 league goals and registered 11 assists.

But the 22-year-old wants to keep things under wraps and reminded his followers that he is “very, very young.”

“I always try to enjoy my football game by game,” Palmer told Sky Sports.

“A lot of people from outside try to pressure me to replicate what I did last season in terms of numbers.

“It's my second season playing football and I'm still very, very young.”
