After three successive defeats in all competitions, Bayern Munich announced that they would be parting ways with Thomas Tuchel in the summer. However, the former PSG, Chelsea, and Borussia Dortmund head coach is set to remain in Bavaria until the summer and ensured that Der Rekordmeister returned to winning ways on Saturday with a 2-1 victory over RB Leipzig.
Regardless, a new head coach will be appointed by the record champions in the summer, and there is an expectation that it will be Bayer Leverkusen’s Xabi Alonso. The Spaniard has already been contacted by Bayern, and while his focus remains on winning the Bundesliga title with Die Werkself, there is optimism that a deal will be struck.
Nevertheless, if Alonso elects to remain in Leverkusen or move to Liverpool, who have also shown significant interest in his services, Bayern could turn back to Julian Nagelsmann. As reported by Bild, both Nagelsmann and Bayern could imagine rekindling their relationship.
While Nagelsmann is currently leading the German national team into the upcoming European Championships, there is an expectation that he will return to club management after the tournament. An extension with the DFB is not off the table as of yet, but it remains unlikely.
However, how would a return to Bavaria be possible? Nagelsmann was sacked by Oliver Kahn and Hasan Salihamidžić in March 2023, but neither now remain at the club, having been fired themselves just two months after hiring Thomas Tuchel.
As well as this, Chairman of the Supervisory Board Herbert Hainer had explained internally how he felt frustrated about not being sufficiently informed about Nagelsmann’s dismissal. While honorary president Uli Hoeneß publicly stated that the sacking of Nagelsmann was “unwise”.
This has certainly left the door open for a return, but there are currently no discussions surrounding Nagelsmann at Bayern. In fact, there is no alternative to Alonso at this moment in time, with the Spaniard their only target.
