'Crackers' – Newcastle fans baffled by Anthony Gordon not nominated for Premier League Young Player of the Year, as chosen by Kobbie Mainoo
Newcastle fans are asking for “an explanation” as to why Anthony Gordon is not on the shortlist for Premier League Young Player of the Year.
Despite a disappointing campaign for the Magpies as a whole, the winger has been a shining light for them, making a huge improvement on his performances last season.
Following its £45 million move from Everton Last January, expectations were high for the young man.
However, he only scored once, his team's only goal in the 1-1 draw with Chelsea in the last day.
This mandate, however, Gordon has been key to Eddie Howe's, scoring 11 goals and providing 11 assists in 46 appearances, earning him his first senior cap for England in the process.
Despite all this, the 23-year-old has not been able to be included in the List of Premier League YPOTY nominees – and Geordies fans can't believe he's been snubbed and manchester united Young Kobbiee Mainoo has been included.
“Someone explain to me how Kobbie Mainoo He is nominated for young player of the season Antonio Gordon!!!”, wrote a fan on X.
“Mainoo is a good player and I can't wait to see what the future holds for him, but AG has had a crazy season and much better than him.”
A second said: “What made Mainoo part of this list? He didn't even play half the season. Gordon not being here is a shame.”
“Don't get me wrong, I think he's clearly talented, but having Mainoo on this list over Anthony Gordon is crazy,” a third added.
Gordon has been consistent for Howe all season, while the Red Devils' young talent didn't emerge until late November.
The 19-year-old impressed greatly after his breakthrough at Old Trafford and was also called up to the England squad for friendlies against Brazil and Belgium in March.
He scored three goals and picked up one assist in 27 appearances for Man United's first team, but Magpies fans are yet to see him get ahead of their winger.
The vote, which will be cast by fans, involves only eight players who were 23 years old or younger at the start of the 2023/24 season.
The rest of the nominees include Newcastle's Alexander Isak, Manchester City Phil Foden and Erling HaalandChelsea Cole Palmer, ArsenalTottenham's Bukayo Saka and William Saliba and Tottenham's Destiny Udogie.
Chelsea's summer signing Palmer took home the Young Player of the Year and Chelsea Player of the Year awards at the Blues' awards ceremony this week.
Meanwhile, Foden picked up the Football Writers' Association Footballer of the Year Awards.
