Wharton joined Palace on February 1 from Blackburn for an impressive £22.5million. transfer for the then 19-year-old, with the south London club paying £18m upfront.

At that time Bayern were interested in the youngster, as were Chelseafollowing their rapid rise in the Championship, but Palace won the race.

That could be a costly mistake on the part of both European giants, with Palace now demanding a hefty fee if any club come calling in the summer, and Bayern Munich are understood to remain interested.

The deal for Wharton was another shrewd move by Eagles brass, who would have hoped it would follow the same trajectory as Michael Olise and Eberechi Eze in the club.

Olise and Eze were also poached from the second tier, from Reading and Queens Park Rangers respectively, and have become key first-team stars at Palace, and both are now linked with potential big-money moves.

Wharton's first three months at Selhurst Park have certainly been memorable as he quickly became part of Palace manager Oliver Glasner's starting line-up.

The young midfielder has played 15 games and has played an important role in Palace beat Manchester United 4-0and has contributed three assists, including one in Saturday's 3-1 win over the Wolves.

It has even been tipped for late call-up to England squad for Euro 2024 Bookmakers have slashed the odds of his name being on Gareth Southgate's list this summer.
