Danny Murphy tells Everton players to accept abuse from fans and that supporters have the right to criticise the team
Everton fans had a right to criticise their players' poor performances: they need to play better.
That's the opinion of the former Liverpool star Danny Murphywho has defended the Toffees supporters following the clash at the train station.
A selection of fans waited at Euston station for the Everton team before taking the train back to Merseyside after their 4-0 defeat at Tottenham on Saturday.
Striker Neal Maupay has criticised the reaction on social media after he and his teammates were subjected to X-rated comments.
Having battled relegation in each of the last three seasons, it seems that Sean DycheThe Manchester men are bracing for another tough campaign, with the club bottom of the table after two games.
And talkSPORT pundit Murphy, who won five trophies with fierce rivals Everton Liverpoolinsists the only way for Everton's stars to silence their critics is to put in better performances.
Talking about the Home of talkSPORTMurphy said: “Your job is not to react, let's make this happen.
“You can't have all the plaudits and the wonderful, amazing lifestyle and the ridiculous salary that footballers – myself included when I was playing – you can't have all the good things without the bad.
“What you're talking about is a couple of lads who paid to go to London to watch them play and probably feel like they didn't put in any effort.”
“They are joking and mocking, and they make themselves look like idiots because of their tone and aggressiveness.
“But if one of the boys confronted them, they would probably run away, they were just two little boys.
“I've been a player and I've heard that, I've been in that position, and all you have to do is show some resilience, understand your position, the club you represent and how passionate they are and improve it by playing better.”
What is being discussed MaupayResponding to Murphy's comments, he said: “He gets paid what he gets paid to sit on the bench and do nothing.
“So he doesn't have to accept it because he hasn't played, you could argue.
“But the reality is that his performances when he has been there have been mediocre. So you have to accept it and play better.
“Stop posting this on social media to try and trick a couple of fans who are furious that their passion gets the better of them, they've had a few pints, spent a fortune and are criticising the players.
“Accept the challenge and do better.”
He continued: “You can use aggressive words, but that wouldn't be intimidating to me, and it won't be intimidating to a 6ft 1in footballer, who's built like a tank and the guy has had about five, six, seven pints and is about 5ft 8in, who's shouting at me over a fence.
“I know I'm exaggerating a little bit, but the reality is that I've been in that position and the only thing I got out of it was: 'I can't let that happen again, I have to do better.'”
“I never thought, 'I'd like to fight him.'”
Murphy concluded his opinion by saying, “Just move on! And if any fan insults you, accept it and just do better.”
“If you think we're going to stop all the passionate fans from yelling insults, let's go.
“Now, if one of them punches you, throws a bottle or a drink at you, then fine, but verbal diarrhoea, if that's going to affect you as a Premier League footballer, you don't stand a chance.”
