Darwin Nunez removed all Liverpool-related photos from his Instagram page in a move that left fans stunned.
Liverpool returned to winning ways on Sunday with a solid 4-2 victory about Tottenham, but the mood of Reds fans quickly changed after the match when they saw the striker's move on social media.
The only Liverpool-related photo left on his page is his profile photo, which is a snapshot of the back of his shirt that says “Darwin” and his team number, nine.
Otherwise, his Instagram profile is just photos of him with Uruguay and Benfica and some other photos of him and his family.
Reacting to the move, one Liverpool fan wrote on his future at Liverpool is strange.
“Online abuse or direct criticism is not acceptable no matter what,” said another. “Support your players, even in difficult times. Even on a human level, we all have mental difficulties and need support. You will never walk alone, Darwin Núñez.”
A third added: “I've seen that Nunez has deleted all his Liverpool-related posts. Obviously no player should be abused. But the (purely footballing) criticism is fair. He cost £85m.
“Two seasons and he's still disappointing, especially in front of goal and he gets caught offside too often.”
Núñez has struggled for consistency in front of goal since arriving at Anfield from Benfica for a total fee of £85million in the summer of 2022.
In 94 appearances, the Uruguayan scored 33 goals and provided 17 assists.
This is a modest return for a striker starting out in the Premier League.
However, the 24-year-old has felt more guilty than most for missing several golden opportunities to find the back of the net.
His 15 minutes on the pitch at the end of the victory over Spurs demonstrated this, being flagged offside twice and achieving a direct one-on-one in Guglielmo Vicario.
Núñez has not scored a goal since 3-1 Sheffield United in early April.
The Uruguayan's tally of 11 league goals this season puts him 15th in the top flight this season, with his teammate and winger. Mohamed Salah finishing fifth with 18 goals.
Rivals for the title and leader of the league, city of manchester's Erling Haalandmeanwhile, he has achieved 25.
It is unclear why Núñez has removed evidence of his Liverpool career from his profile, but his future beyond Jurgen KloppThe game remains unclear.
He has four years left on his current contract.
When asked to comment on Núñez and Salah's problems in front of goal after the 2-0 loss to Everton Last month, Klopp told reporters: “It's complicated. The strikers have to go through these things. That's how it is.
“That's the life of a striker. The life of a goalkeeper is to make 500 saves, then a howler, and everyone talks about this. The life of a striker is to score all the time, then he doesn't score for a while and then everyone asks why not I won't score.
“It can be the hardest thing in the world and sometimes it's the easiest thing in the world, depending on the opportunity you have. We had good opportunities against Everton, but again we were in a bit of a rush to finish them.
“So believe again, believe again and try to put yourself in the right positions to finish off situations. It will be a really rich man or woman who can write that book (about a forward returning to his best level). You have to go “. through.
“I try to help them speed up the process. That doesn't say anything about the quality of the kids.”
