The Abendzeitung reports that the DFB are trying to recruit Paul Wanner for the German national team, but it seems they are already well ahead of Austria.
Wanner is eligible to play for both Austria and Germany and recently turned down the opportunity to play for the German under-21 side this week as he wishes to take a break after the start of the season after already playing four games since joining Heidenheim on loan in the summer.
The 18-year-old also turned down the opportunity to be a part of the Austria squad under Ralf Rangnick for EURO 2024, which clearly indicates where the forward wants to play his international football.
Germany head coach Julian Nagelsmann was asked about Wanner in his press conference yesterday and said the chance of a call-up to the national team this season was “up to him how early he decides to join the senior national team”.
Wanner has started his loan at Heidenheim tremendously as in four games he has four goals and one assist. Hi performances have helped Heidenheim top the Bundesliga table after two games as well as qualify for the league phase of the Europa Conference League as they fended off a comeback from Swedish side BK Häcken.
