Gary Neville and Piers Morgan were among those left stunned at Diego Carlos‘ horrible close-range miss in Monday’s Premier League clash between Aston Villa and Liverpool.

Carlos spurned a huge chance to level the match at 2-2 in the first-half when the ball was played to him across the six-yard box by Leon Bailey, but somehow managed to put the shot wide.

Liverpool’s Brazilian goalkeeper, Alisson, had left the goal gaping and Carlos only needed to tap the ball over the line to restore Villa back on level terms in the match that could see them clinch Champions League football next season.

The 31-year-old was left with his head in the turf as the two-yard chance went begging, with it later being revealed by Opta that 96 out of 100 chances in that situation would result in a goal.

Jamie Carragher attempted to offer some explanation for the glaring miss after Gary Neville labelled the gaffe as ‘unbelievable’.

‘I mean, I think he just makes, I’m going to defend him a little bit, and I think he actually messes his feet up. I think he’s actually ready to think I’m going to put this in with me right foot, just little Carlos’ feet here,’ he said on Sky Sports.

‘It’s just this little step now got with the right foot and then he throws his left foot out.’

Arsenal fan Morgan – like all Gunners supporters – is desperate to see arch rivals Tottenham beat Man City in Tuesday’s game that would put Mikel Arteta’s side in control of the Premier League title race heading into the final game of the season.

Losing to Villa would still give Spurs a chance to seal Champions League football, with Morgan evidently hoping that will make Tottenham be more competitive against City.

Taking to X, Morgan tweeted: ‘That is the worst open goal sitter missed in football history. On behalf of all Arsenal fans, thank you Diego Carlos!’

Other football fans reacting to the error on line weren’t as subtle, with one supporter commenting: ‘ That miss from Diego Carlos might actually be the worst I’ve ever seen. Not only because he somehow missed, but because he also got the only level of contact that meant Watkins also couldn’t score.’

Another account similarly questioned whether Carlos’ shot was the ‘worst miss of the century.’
