On Wednesday, Atletico Madrid had one of their most difficult Champions League nights in recent years. Diego Simeone's side were convincingly beaten 4-0 by Benfica at the Estadio da Luz – a result and performance that Los Colchoneros will be incredibly disappointed with.
FULL-TIME: Benfica 4-0 Atlético Madrid
Unacceptable. Shame. Embarrassing. Possibly the worst game of the Diego Simeone era.
Absolute nightmare of a game. pic.twitter.com/8YJZ3I8GQ0

Speaking in his post-match press conference (via AS Diary), Atleti coach Diego Simeone took the blame for the crushing defeat.
“The responsibility is mine to try to create what I wanted, but it didn't show. The penalty came very early, we went 2-0, and we couldn't generate what we wanted.”
Simeone also tried to remain optimistic, despite a devastating evening for him and his family Atletico Madrid players
“I always think positively, I always see this as a good opportunity to continue to improve. We did a very good job. We had a game that was not what we expected, but it is part of the game. Congratulations to the opponent, a very good match. They took advantage of every mistake we made and were incredibly decisive, without a doubt.”
