As first reported by Ruhr Nachrichten and then Sky Germany, former Borussia Mönchengladbach and Hamburg head coach Dieter Hecking is on the verge of becoming Bochum’s head coach.
Hecking is said to already be in Bochum today before taking over the club. Once the deal is approved by the board, the 60-year-old is to be presented on Tuesday. Friedheim Funkel was also a topic at the club but no agreement could be reached between the two parties. Funkel most recently led Kaiserslautern to the DFB Pokal final and helped save them from relegation in the 2.Bundesliga.
Interim head coaches Markus Feldhoff and Murat Ural are set to stay at the club with Ural being Hecking’s assistant and Feldhoff being given a different role.
During the two matches under interim managers, Bochum have conceded 12 goals losing 5-0 at home to Bayern Munich before losing 7-2 to Eintracht Frankfurt on Saturday.
Hecking has vast experience managing most recently Nürnberg and Hamburg in the 2.Bundesliga while his most recent foray in the Bundesliga saw him spend three years at Gladbach as head coach. Hecking also led Wolfsburg to the DFB Pokal in 2015 and a second-place finish in the Bundesliga.
Bochum need something close to a miracle to help them survive relegation as they are still without a win this season.
