Borussia Dortmund win at home against Paris Saint-Germain has confirmed that the Bundesliga, not the Premier League, will get an extra place in next season's Champions League.
England thin hopes Hopes of overtaking Germany in the UEFA coefficient ranking have been extinguished and the top five teams in the Bundesliga will play in the Champions League. Only the four best clubs in the Premier League will participate.
Dortmund is guaranteed one of those places along with Bayer Leverkusen, Bayern Munich, Stuttgart and Leipzig. “We wanted to qualify for the Champions League Through the Bundesliga and not in this way,” said Dortmund coach Edin Terzic. “But the fact that it is enough to rank us fifth is also partly due to our success, our contribution.”
In it first divisionAston Villa, fourth placed, is seven points ahead of its closest pursuer, Tottenham, who has two games less. The first of them will come against Chelsea on Thursday night.
UEFA made two extra Champions League places available for next season's new 36-team tournament and Italy had already secured one. Those places have been determined by the clubs' performance in the three European competitions this season.
