Aston Villa Under-21s secured their place in the last 16 of the Vertu Trophy in dramatic fashion on Tuesday evening, with a penalty-shoot-out win over Blackpool.
Nothing separated the two sides after a 90 minutes in which Jamaldeen Jimoh-Aloba’s assured finish 12 minutes from time cancelled out Elliot Embleton’s opener for the hosts at Bloomfield Road.
And so, the two sides shared a mammoth shoot-out which saw 38 penalties taken, and 35 scored. Villa came out on top, as Jordan Lawrence-Gabriel’s effort crashed off the post to secure a 18-17 triumph for Josep Gombau’s side.
The Young Lions will now face Bradford City in the next round, looking to book their place in the quarter-finals.
