Eagle-eyed Manchester United fans are convinced of the next signing amid a curious appearance on the squad list
Eagle-eyed Manchester United fans are convinced that Sofyan Amrabat is keen to extend his stay at the club.
Amrabat moved to Old Trafford on a season-long loan from Fiorentina on deadline day 2023, with the Serie A club securing a loan fee of £8.5m.
The loan also offered United the chance to sign the Moroccan international on a permanent deal for around £25m, but the club decided not to pursue it.
Although Amrabat has already returned to Fiorentina, some Red Devils fans do not believe he will be able to play in Serie A this season.
They have discovered that on United's website, Amrabat is the first name visible in the midfield section of the squad list.
Not only that, the 27-year-old is seen wearing United's home shirt for the 24/25 season.
Interestingly, the club have dispensed with players such as Anthony Martial, Brandon Williams and Raphael Varane, who all left on free transfers.
One fan wrote: “Does this mean Amrabat is leaving United?”
Another noted: “Zirkzee's squad number has been updated on the club's official app. Hojlund's new number was included on the same day his move was announced. This means the website is updated daily.”
A return to Old Trafford for Amrabat may not be out of the question given the Red Devils manager Erik the Hag is on the market looking for a new midfielder.
The club had been Closely linked with Paris Saint-Germain midfielder Manuel Ugartealthough the price asked by the Ligue 1 giants has cooled United's interest.
A move for Burnley's Sander Berge has also been discussed, according to The Athletic.
Amrabat struggled for consistency throughout his season with United, starting just 15 of the 30 games he appeared in.
The 27-year-old has just returned to training with Fiorentina after waiting to sign for United.
He could have landed at Fenerbache, now managed by the iconic coach Jose Mourinhobut the Turkish giants rejected a £9m bid for Amrabat.
Fiorentina sporting director Daniele Prade said in June that he expected Amrabat to remain at the club, but did not anticipate that would be the case.
“I would keep him in Florence, but that doesn't seem to be what he has in mind,” Prade said.
“I think he wants to stay in the Premier League, but we haven't heard from anyone since.”
Amrabat has amassed 107 appearances for Fiorentina since joining from Serie A side Hellas Verona in January 2020.
