- Aston Villa Vs. Manchester City – Sat, Dec 21st 2024, 12:30
Unai Emery hailed a “great day” for Aston Villa after they showed their quality to beat Manchester City at Villa Park.
The home side were into their stride from the first whistle, taking the lead via Jhon Durán after 16 minutes.
Morgan Rogers doubled Villa’s advantage and they held out in stoppage time following Phil Foden’s late consolation to secure three Premier League points.
“I’m thankful for our supporters,” Emery said.
“They are very proud of our work and we need them. How they were here today: supporting us, transmitting their energy, it’s very important for us.
“We have our responsibility to them to try and play with energy, to try to show our capacity, our skills, our intensity.
“Manchester City are a very difficult team and I think we played fantastic. We played with 11 players – 12 with our supporters. We’re very proud and thankful of them.”
Villa produced one of their best displays of the season to overcome the reigning champions, who failed to seriously trouble Emi Martínez before their last-gasp strike.
Emery was proud of how each and every one of his players performed.
He said: “Every player, in the tactical structure, was fantastic, defensively and offensively.
“Their commitment to do everything we worked on before the match was very important.
“Individually, they are the protagonists, the players, with their skills, their capacity and their qualities, looking to exploit and play in the structure.
“I think every player performed great. It was a really great day for the team and for individual players as well.”
