Emotional Rob Edwards fights back tears as Luton's relegation from the Premier League is all but confirmed
Luton Town boss Rob Edwards cut an emotional figure after their defeat to West Ham left their hopes of avoiding relegation in tatters.
Despite taking the lead after six minutes, the hatters lost 3-1 in London.
Luton sealed a shock promotion to the top flight last year by winning the Championship play-off final, and many predicted they would be relegated this season.
And despite their resistance, they are effectively down with their -12 goal difference too big to chase.
Speaking after the defeat at West Ham, Edwards sounded emotional and appeared to hold back tears as he reflected on his fate.
“We know the situation,” he said. “It's a difficult day, it's difficult to go out and talk to everyone today, but I have to do it. “What I want to say, and what I have said to the players and the staff there now, is thank you.
“Thank you for giving me the best 18 months of my life, they have been incredible and you have given me and us absolutely everything and also to the board of directors, to Gary (Sweet, CEO) and the board of directors.
“I have to thank our fans, what I just witnessed moved me, which is probably why it has taken me so long to talk to you now.
“It was really special what our supporters did but I think it shows the connections between us, the players, the staff, the fans, it's quite unique and rarely seen anywhere in the world, that made me incredibly proud.”
Speaking to talkSPORT later, Edwards believes fans and players alike have helped create a special season for everyone.
“I'd like to think it goes both ways. They've made it special for me and for us as players and staff and hopefully what some of these guys have done has given them memories to last a lifetime.
“I'm really disappointed that the Premier League journey is over for at least a year, but it gives us a lot of confidence, a club that is so united and united. To be successful you need that and we have to harbor that.” “.
And when asked about his hunger to return to the Premier League if they go down, he added: “I think you saw it at the end.
“The conviction is there from the stands and if that can't move you forward, then nothing will.”
Luton's players received a warm reception from fans at the away ground at the London Stadium amid the likely prospect of relegation.
The Hatters have also performed bravely against top six teams this season, even sealing a 1-1 draw at home against Liverpool, but there have also been 23 league defeats in the campaign.
Forest failed to ensure survival in a 3-2 defeat against Chelsea but Luton seem aware that they will play in the championship next season.
