English clubs have racked up £1million in fines for player, manager and official misbehaviour so far this season, damming new findings have revealed.

The shameful total passed the milestone after Burnley boss Vincent Kompany was hit with a £10,000 fine for losing his temper at referee Darren England in March.

It marks the second season in a row in which poor behaviour in the country’s top four divisions has resulted in fines totalling over the seven-figure mark.

The Premier League is responsible for the bulk of that figure. Indeed, the fines meted out to players and staff, when added together, amounts to over £850,000.

£665,000 of the overall top-flight total was for player misconduct while £193,500 was shelled out after the FA took action against managers and coaches.

The biggest single fine was dished out to Aston Villa when they were charged £180,000 for their player fracas following their victory against Brentford.

The Bees were ordered to pay £175,000 for the same incident.

Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk was slapped with the biggest individual fine after being told to pay £100,000 for savaging referee John Brooks as a ‘f****** joke’.

11 top-flight clubs – more than half of the league – have been punished by the FA.

Also included on the list of shame is Chelsea’s Reece James after he argued with referee Jarred Gillett after September’s loss to Aston Villa and was fined £90,000.

Clubs and players in the Championship, League One and League are not exempt.

Eight teams in the second tier have been fined so far this season, totalling £23,000.

However, 17 teams in both of the bottom two divisions have been rebuked by the FA. Wigan alone have been hit with four different fines, adding up to £29,500.

Leyton Orient boss Richie Wellens has opened his wallet for three fines totalling £5,900, meanwhile, after losing his temper with officials and opposing players.

Across the Premier League and EFL, 53 of the 92 clubs have been fined.
