The 26-year-old has not had many opportunities to show why the Blues spent £52m on him last summer due to his injuries.

He needed knee surgery after suffering an injury on last season's tour of the US and ended up missing 39 games in all competitions.

A new manager gives him a fresh chance to light up the Premier League as he did with RB Leipzig in the Bundesliga.

Maresca's biggest problem on the pitch will be trying to fit all his players into the team and find their best position.

In his first preseason press conference in the United States on Tuesday, he said: “He can play everywhere, he can play everywhere.”

“He is one of the players who has been doing very, very well in these two weeks (of preseason).

“He is already taking the path we want him to play on, that is important.

“As I said, these types of players for me, they can play as wingers, they can play as attacking midfielders, they can play as number 9, they can play in different positions.

“What we are going to try to do is to have players who can play in different positions, that is the way I see football, and that is also the way I like to work every day to try to improve the players and help them not only play in one position, (but) that they can play in different positions.

“Also because sometimes many players say that I can play as a winger and for them it is just there (in a position), but I don't think that if you move them five, ten meters inside, there will be big changes.

“It’s just a matter of convincing them and adapting, but when they are good players they can play in different positions.”

Chelsea are currently in the United States for their pre-season tour and facing Wrexham in the early hours of Thursday.

They will play at the San Francisco 49ers' Levi's Stadium, and their first practice will take place at Stanford Stadium, on the campus of Stanford University.

Speaking ahead of that first game, Maresca said: “It's always important to have a connection with the fans. The fans from the United States, the fans from England, the fans from anywhere.

“We haven't had the chance to visit the city because we arrived very late (last night) and we had a session this afternoon. (But) it's always nice to spend time with our fans abroad, not just in England.

“As a player or coach I have been here many times and it is always a pleasure.”
