As Union Berlin defeated Hoffenheim 2-1 yesterday to maintain their unbeaten start to Bundesliuga, fans in Köpenick and South Korea united in celebration as Wooyeong Jeong scored his first goal for the club.
Union went ahead inside three minutes as Tom Rothe became the youngest goalscorer for Union Berlin.
Two minutes later, Jeong doubled Union’s lead, becoming the club’s first goalscorer from South Korea.
Wooyeong Jeong joined Union Berlin on loan from VfB Stuttgart in late August and has hit the ground running.
After moving to Stuttgart from Freiburg in 2023, Jeong had to settle for cameo appearances off the bench.
Jeong was top-scorer for South Korea as they won the gold medal at the Asian Games in autumn 2023 with eight goals but managed just two last season in 26 appearances for Stuttgart.
Seeking more game-time, Jeong joined Union Berlin and made his first start for the club yesterday.
He showed composure and creativity to dazzle the Hoffenheim defence, turning them inside and out before firing low into the bottom left corner to send the Union fans delirious.
His performance was energetic and after the game, Jeong expressed his joy at the win, his goal, and his move to the Capital in a post-match interview:
“I’m very happy that I was in the starting eleven for the first time today and scored my first goal in the Union jersey.
“We were really good in the first half. We tried to give it our all from the start – like we always do in training.
“Of course, the performance in the second half has to be better. But overall I’m very satisfied.
“We’re all very happy about the win.
“The other players in the team helped me a lot – both on and off the pitch. It has been the right move.
“I am playing my favourite position, but I know I have to train hard and I can then continue to play my best.
“My colleagues are very nice, which is why I was able to integrate into the team so quickly.
“I am excited [for what is ahead].”
With Union still unbeaten after the first four games and sitting fourth on eight points, Jeong has a lot to look forward to.
Fans in Köpenick and South Korea will enjoy the ride whilst it last.
