Fans were convinced Erik ten Hag was on double duty during Manchester United‘s clash with Aston Villa.

The Dutchman entered Sunday’s clash at Villa Park under extreme pressure following United’s dismal start to the season.

However, the importance of the occasion didn’t prevent fans from poking fun on social media after a doppelganger for the United boss was spotted.

With the game goalless early in the first half TV cameras cut to Diogo Dalot taking a throw-in on the touchline, while a ball boy bearing a striking resemblance to Ten Hag watched on behind him.

Another added: ‘Did I just see a Ten Hag regen as a ball boy?’

A third agreed: ‘Swear to God I just saw Erik ten Hag as the Villa ball boy.’

Despite receiving criticism from Gary Neville prior to the game for opting for a centre-back pairing of Harry Maguire and Jonny Evans, United produced a solid defensive performance against Unai Emery’s side.

In his first Premier League start of the season the 36-year-old Evans proved to be United’s standout performer against the Villans, never giving an inch as United produced a rare clean sheet.

Chances at the other end of the pitch ultimately went unrealised however, and the visitors were forced to settle for a goalless draw.

But fans couldn't help but notice the similarities between the Dutchman and his lookalike

While avoiding yet another defeat could prolong Ten Hag’s stay of execution, the club’s current league position makes for grim reading for United fans.

Just eight points from their opening seven games of the season marks United’s worst-ever start in the Premier League as they now sit closer to the relegation zone than a Champions League place.
