Ferland Mendy has extended his contract at Real Madrid for three more years.

The 29-year-old left-back, who joined for an initial €48million (£41m/$51.6m) from Lyon in 2019, is now tied down at the Santiago Bernabeu until 2027.

The deal has been agreed for some time and while the club has yet to officially announce it, head coach Carlo Ancelotti confirmed on Monday that everything was agreed.

“We are very happy with him, he has renewed his contract,” Ancelotti said.

The France international remains Madrid’s first choice left-back ahead of Fran Garcia, while David Alaba can also be deployed in the position.

Mendy has struggled with injuries for long periods in Spain but enjoyed a clean bill of health last season, featuring 37 times in all competitions to help Madrid to the Champions League and La Liga titles.

Mendy made 23 La Liga appearances and did not miss a minute during Madrid’s Champions League knockout stage campaign.

The Frenchman has featured in six of Madrid’s seven games so far this term, starting in all of his appearances.

He has 10 caps for his country and was selected for Didier Deschamps’ squad for Euro 2024 but did not feature.

Mendy has won six major trophies during his five seasons in Spain: three La Liga titles, two Champions League titles and the 2023 Copa del Rey.

Real Madrid are next in action against Alaves on Tuesday night in La Liga, where they have 14 points from their opening six matches.
