Everton defender Mason Holgate will sign on loan for Sheffield United, talkSPORT understands.
The centre-back has spent the first half of the season on loan at the Championship team Southampton.
However, Holgate has made just five league appearances since arriving in the summer and is eager to leave Saints for more games.
Bundesliga club Stuttgart were interested, but Sheffield Unitedwho sit bottom of the Premier League table, are set to add the 27-year-old to their ranks.
After coming through the ranks at Barnsley youth club, Holgate signed for Everton in 2015 for just £2 million.
His best spell with the Toffees came between 2019 and 2022, making 80 Premier League appearances over three seasons.
Holgate has appeared 149 times for the club in total, but his role in the team has diminished as he only played nine games last season.
Minutes this season have shown few signs of improvement, with just 469 played in seven appearances in all competitions.
The defender has been a starter in only four of Southampton 28 games in the championship this season, with the Saints third in the table.
Russel Martin's side are seeking an instant return to the Premier League but Holgate may no longer be involved in their campaign.
He will join a Blades team that has only won two Premier League games this season and is nine points away from safety.
Sheffield United sacked Paul Heckingbottom earlier in the campaign and welcomed Chris Wilder to the club.
Their last league win came in December, when they beat Brentford 1-0 at Bramall Lane.
