Former Arsenal midfielder Kristoffer Olsson is hospitalized after collapsing at his home in Denmark.
Olsson's current club, Midtjylland, said the 28-year-old is on a ventilator after the Feb. 20 incident.
The Danish club's statement adds that the Swedish midfielder 'suffers from an apparently acute brain-related illness that is not due to self-harm of any kind, nor is it caused by external factors.'
It said: “A team of Denmark's leading medical experts is working hard to make a diagnosis and initiate appropriate treatment.
“Since his hospitalization, Kristoffer has been surrounded by his immediate family and Midtjylland staff members and is being treated by specialists in the field.
“Midtjylland urges the public to show respect and understanding so that Kristoffer, his family and doctors receive the peace of mind necessary to ensure Kristoffer's healing and recovery as best as possible.
“Everyone in Midtjylland is, of course, deeply affected by Kristoffer's sudden illness and our thoughts and all our support go out to Kristoffer and his family.”
Arsenal posted a message of support on social media after the news was announced Tuesday.
The Gunners said: “Get well soon, Kristoffer. We wish you a speedy and full recovery.”
Olsson came through Arsenal's youth academy and made a senior appearance in a League Cup victory over West Brom in 2013.
After four years in north London, he left for Midtjylland in 2015, then spells at AIK, Krasnodar and Anderlecht, before returning to Midtjylland in 2023.
Olsson has played 20 times for the Danish club this season, recording five assists and last played against Fredrikstad on February 9.
Among his 47 international matches for Sweden, the midfielder participated in four of his team's matches in Euro 2020.
