Here they take a look back on another exciting FPL campaign…
A strong second half to the 2022/23 campaign by Aston Villa was a strong signal to heed for Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers this time around, but few can have imagined Unai Emery’s side would enjoy such a stellar campaign, breaking into the top-four and offering so many attractive FPL assets in doing so.
Here, we look at Villa’s best-performing FPL players from the 2023/24 season…
Highest-scoring FPL asset
After coming fourth last season with 175 points, Ollie Watkins (£8.9m) went one better by finishing third in FPL with an even more impressive 228.
His 19 goals this campaign were bettered by only three players and he achieved the Playmaker of the Year award, given to the player who made the most assists.
Watkins set up 18 goals, two more than his nearest challenger, meaning he achieved the most attacking returns of any player in FPL with 37. He also registered 32 bonus points and seven double-digit hauls.
Watkins also registered 32 bonus points and seven double-digit hauls in a standout campaign.
Attacking returns
Villa scored 76 goals and Watkins was not alone in creating them. Leon Bailey (£5.4m), Moussa Diaby (£6.3) and Douglas Luiz (£5.4m) all proved effective from an attacking perspective.
Bailey came second for attacking returns, hitting double figures for both goals (10) and assists (11), to average five points per start. Diaby also provided 11 assists and matched the Jamaican for three double-digit hauls, scoring six goals in his debut season.
Luiz scored six more points than the Frenchman to earn 148 points, level and joint-second at the club with Bailey.
The Brazilian made five assists and scored nine goals, four of which came from the penalty spot. He was also an explosive asset, producing five double-digit returns and 25 bonus points, placing him second in both categories to Watkins.
Luiz was noticeably stronger at home, where he scored 107 points, only eight fewer than Watkins.
One of the most important factors for FPL managers is the consistency of starts. Watkins proved Villa’s most dependable name, missing only one match, while Ezri Konsa (£4.5m), John McGinn (£5.3m) and Luiz all made 35 starts.
Best defensive returns
Emiliano Martínez (£5.2m) contributed the most clean sheets for Villa, with eight, while Konsa and Boubacar Kamara (£5.0m) each produced seven.
Konsa made the most interceptions with 28 and led the way for Clearances, Blocks and Interceptions (CBI) with 116, but Kamara’s clean-sheet feat is quite something considering he played his last game in GW24, highlighting his importance to a side that lost Tyrone Mings to injury for the entire season on GW1.
Martínez had another strong campaign. His 317 recoveries were 94 more than last season and only Everton’s Jordan Pickford (£4.8m), Luton’s Thomas Kaminski (£4.5m) and Fulham’s Bernd Leno (£4.8m) managed more.
