“I know there is a man on site at the moment, but at the moment it is just a speculative suggestion.”

The suggestion did not go down well with Hammers fans, who did not agree with Stelling's suggestion.

Del, the West Ham fan, said: “Frank was a fantastic footballer but not a great manager. How about Harry in charge and Frank your number two?

Another Hammers fan added: “Ally, tell Jeff Halloween is over so he can get rid of the horns and tail now. “The little devil.”

Meanwhile, Spurs fan Martin said: “Frank is perfect for West Ham, he will take them back to the Championship where they belong.”

Lampard came through the West Ham academy but never got on with the majority of supporters there, many of whom believed he was there thanks to his father, Frank Sr, a former player and assistant to boss Harry Redknapp at the time.

He joined Chelsea for £11 million in 2001 and received a hostile reception each time he returned to Upton Park as a player.

Redknapp, in a now famous response to a fan, predicted that Lampard Jr would be remembered as a great footballer. He was right to win multiple Premier League and Champions League titles, as well as playing over 100 times for England.
