Gio Reyna eyeing January exit from Dortmund: Top destinations for USMNT talent

In a strategic move to enhance their current squad, Borussia Dortmund has welcomed Jadon Sancho from Manchester United and Ian Maatsen from Chelsea, both on loan deals. These high-profile acquisitions are a clear attempt to improve Dortmund‘s standing, currently fifth in the Bundesliga, and strengthen their campaign in the Champions League’s last 16.

However, these additions have raised concerns about the future of American midfielder Gio Reyna at the club. Despite his significant contributions to Dortmund‘s previous season, Reyna’s game time has drastically reduced this season, with a mere 318 minutes across all competitions. His situation is further complicated by the arrival of Sancho and Maatsen, intensifying competition in the attacking department.

Reyna‘s preference for playing centrally as a No. 10 has been overshadowed by the presence of Marco Reus and Julian Brandt. His relegation to the wing, and the squad’s latest reinforcements, makes his path to regular playtime even more challenging.

Amidst this backdrop, ESPN has reported Reyna’s intention to leave Dortmund, with Sevilla and Real Sociedad showing interest. The club’s willingness to let Reyna move, if their valuation is met, aligns with reports of him being offered to top European clubs.

Potential landing spots for Reyna

Jesse Marsch, speaking on the CBS Sports podcast ‘Call it What you Want,’ emphasized the need for Reyna to find a team that suits his playing style. “He needs a team where he’s going to play – and play in Europe – and a team that plays intensive,” Marsch said. He suggested that Real Sociedad, with their dynamic play and coach Imanol Aguacil’s leadership, would be an ideal fit for Reyna.

Fiorentina

The team from Florence had been off to a flying start at the beginning of the Serie A season, but with the injury to key player Nico Gonzalez, Fiorentina have not been the same team. Struggling to score goals with a major lack of depth in attacking positions, Reyna could be competing for a spot in the starting XI immediately. With many of his American compatriots in Italy already, this could be a perfect move for Reyna to get consistent minutes in a top league.

PSV

PSV already has a few USMNT internationals on their squad with the likes of Malik Tillman, Ricardo Pepi, and Sergio Dest. Reyna could be a good addition to the squad that is looking for some dpeth on the wings due to injuries to Noa Lang and Hirving Lozano. A club that is flying in the Dutch league and has a spot in the last 16 of the Champions League could be an ideal situation for Reyna to compete and get minutes.

As one of the United States’ most promising talents, Reyna‘s next steps will be closely watched. The right move could not only reignite his club career but also bolster his position in the national team ahead of major international tournaments.
