On Thursday, Barcelona announced that Pau Cubarsi has signed a new contract, ending any speculation about a possible summer move away. The 17-year-old defender has been a revelation since breaking into the first team earlier this season, and had attracted interest from a number of clubs.
One of those was Girona, whose interest in Cubarsi did not end with his contract extension from Barcelona. Los Blanquivermells dream of signing the teenage defender on a season-long loan deal, as reported by Sport.
Cubarsi had been in Girona's youth academy between 2014 and 2018, but ended up moving to Barcelona, where he has been ever since. Coach Michel Sanchez and sporting director Quique Carcel would be desperate to get him back, even for just one season, although Barcelona have no intention of entertaining a loan deal at this stage.
The only way that Barcelona would allow Cubars to join Gerona on loan is if Xavi Hernandez gives permission. Since he has held it down as the undisputed starter in recent months, it is highly unlikely that the 44-year-old would do so.
