Former Bayern Munich CEO Karl-Heinz Rummenigge has launched an attack on the DFB for the treatment of Hansi Flick during the former Bayern Munich head coach’s time in charge of the German national team.
This comes after Rummenigge gave an interview to kicker, stating: “Hansi is a very good coach. You don’t win seven titles in a year and a half if you’re not a good coach.
“Over time, Hansi became a victim of the DFB, which was totally unstable at the time.
“I know Hansi and know him as a person,” added Rummenigge.
“When he was with us, he came to my office three times a week to drink an espresso and talk about all sorts of things. He needs people he can trust – and sorry, with all due respect, he didn’t have that at the DFB. I told him at the time: ‘Be careful’.”
Flick took charge of the German national team between August 2021 and September 2023 including the catastrophic World Cup campaign in Qatar which resulted in a group stage exit, and won just 12 of his 25 games during his tenure.
But his time as Bayern Munich head coach was nothing short of exceptional. Of his 86 games in charge, Flick won 70, drew eight and lost eight. His side scored 260 goals and conceded just 91. During his time at Bayern, Flick won two Bundesliga titles, one German Cup, one Champions League, one FIFA Club World Cup, one DFL Supercup and one UEFA Supercup.
