Harry Kane scored his 24th Bundesliga goal at the weekend as Bayern Munich secured an important comeback win against Borussia Mönchengladbach to remain within two points of Bayer Leverkusen.
The 30-year-old is now just 17 goals away from matching Robert Lewandowski’s Bundesliga record of 41 goals in a single league season, with 14 games remaining.
“I didn’t know what to expect. I always believed in myself and I had scored goals every year in the Premier League and that’s what I wanted to go and do in the Bundesliga,” Kane told the PA news agency.
“I probably didn’t picture scoring as many goals as I have now at this stage of the season. But you know me, I don’t like to put a limit on anything.
“I don’t like to think about record in particular, they are a consequence of hard work and doing all the little stuff off the pitch that put you to where you are on it.
“My focus is on the short term and then as we get closer and we get towards the end of the season and I am in touching distance, then for sure it will be something I would love to achieve.”
Record Bundesliga goals in a single season
Gerd Müller scored 40 Bundesliga goals in the 1971/71 season, a record that remained until Lewandowski eclipsed it during the 2020/21 campaign. The Pole’s previous best was the season prior, where he scored 34 goals but the following campaign, Lewandowski was a man determined to beat Müller’s record.
And now, could we see the record for most goals in a single Bundesliga season being broken again? Kane is in excellent goalscoring form and with 14 games remaining, scoring 18 goals to surpass Lewandowski’s record is quite feasible. Of course, the Englishman must remain injury free while Bayern have to be at their best, something which they haven’t been this season.
Kane’s 24th Bundesliga goal matches that of Luca Toni (2007/08) for most goals by a Bayern Munich player in his debut season. But not only that, Kane is now only six goals away from matching Uwe Seeler’s league record of 30, scored in the 1963/64 campaign.
