Hertha Berlin wanted to sign Vincent Kompany two years ago

Hertha Berlin attempted to sign Vincent Kompany as head coach two years ago, Fredi Bobic has revealed.

Speaking on Sky Germany, the Hertha sporting director explained that he and Kompany met in Düsseldorf before the start of the 2022/23 season.

“I spent an evening with Vincent two years ago. We talked a lot about football.”

Ultimately, Kompany chose Burnley who were in the Championship at the time. In his first season at the club, Kompany would get them promoted to the Premier League.

For Hertha, they chose to go with Sandro Schwarz and were relegated from the Bundesliga that campaign.

So why didn’t Kompany choose the then Bundesliga outfit?

From Fredi Bobic’s point-of-view, he believed that Kompany’s playing style was more suited to England than Germany.

“He tends to England at this point. It would probably not have worked in the form of the mixed location that we had in Berlin. Later I decided on Sandro Schwartz. The way he [Kompany] has already thought about football is more suitable for the English manager system. You can only find that in Germany with the big clubs. It was perhaps a bit ahead.”

After two seasons at Burnley, Kompany has found himself back in Germany with Bayern Munich. Perhaps Hertha Berlin fans are now wondering what could have been?
