I didn't want to be on TV but I became a favourite on Soccer AM and ended up in a headlock from Denzel Washington. I now have a new career after a lifestyle change.
From being camera-shy to becoming a star of Soccer AM and now running one of YouTube's most beloved channels, Tubes' career has been a whirlwind.
The 42-year-old, whose real name is Peter Dale, gained cult hero status among football fans during his long-running stint on the Soccer AM television show.
From his iconic 'One Answer Only' segment to baffling celebrities with his unique rap, Tubes never failed to put a smile on fans' faces during his 21 years of working on the Sky show, which was canceled last year.
Since then, Rocket, another beloved and popular cast member, has created a YouTube channel. channel called Soccer PMwhich he told talkSPORT is a “tribute” to the “glory days” and his first guest on his first episode It was the one and only 'Tuuuuubbbes'.
It's safe to say he's come a long way since his first television appearance on Soccer AM in 2001, where he initially played 'Peter the test tube baby'.
Although he never had any intentions of becoming that character.
“I'm quite shy and I still am,” he said. he said to Rocket.
But his personality immediately resonated with fans – and the show's high-profile guests – who watched Tubes showcase his musical skills to Hollywood's elite.
And what stands out most for him is the interaction with two-time Oscar winner Denzel Washington, as he recalls their meeting at the Savoy Hotel in London.
When asked who he enjoyed talking to the most, he said, “Probably the most fun interview I've ever done: Denzel Washington or Will Ferrell.”
“The Denzel Washington thing was weird,” he continued, recalling the waiting room where reporters are kept before receiving their five minutes to interview the guest.
“When you go on a film tour, there are media outlets from ITV, BBC, all the media.
“So I came in, I used to wear Converse with big baggy jeans and a black shirt, and everyone was wearing suits.
“They were saying, 'Oh, hello,' while eating their cupcakes, and I sat in the corner playing Snake on my Nokia.
“They were like, 'Are you here to see Denzel?' and I was like, 'Well, obviously,' I didn't come just to sit and have cupcakes.
“They'd be like, 'Oh, he's not going to like you.' I'd be like, 'Well, then it'll make a really good TV show, it's a win-win,' and I used to get nervous all the time.”
Rocket later recalled that his friend would get so scared interviewing celebrities on camera that he would often throw up.
However, Tubes put that aside and delivered his rap and, for some, a nasty look.
“I said, 'You're a top man, you're Den, I've been rapping since I was ten, rap is for life, not just for Christmas, oooh,' and I had my eyes closed.
“And when I opened my eyes, I could see Denzel Washington (expressionless), so we both stared at each other, I was looking at Denzel Washington after telling him that I've been rapping since I was ten years old.
“And all of a sudden, he just gave it back and played along. It was amazing.
“We were walking out and he had me on his mind. He said, 'Don't mess with Big Tubes,' and I walked past a room, and all the suits were looking at me with their tea buns. I thought, 'That went well!'”
While Tubes, who survived a heart attack in early 2018, may have been carefree on screen, he battled alcohol addiction but has since been sober for eight years.
He Chelsea One fan proudly commented, “At the end of May (2024) it will be eight years (since he last consumed alcohol), so I'm excited, I'm so happy. It's the best thing I've ever done in my life.”
When Rocket asked if there was a time when he thought he'd never be able to stop drinking, Tubes said, “Obviously, when I was drinking, I was in that world, and that's all I did.
“But it's the best decision I've ever made and the last eight years have been the happiest of my life.”
Since then he has successfully launched a YouTube channel called Golf lifewhich is approaching 300,000 subscribers, where his guests were delighted with his marked sense of humor.
“Golf is also a form of exercise, it's good for the mind, so I didn't smoke cigarettes when I had the heart attack – I got hit in the head!
“My life has changed and now I love it, I have more clarity, more purpose, I couldn’t continue as I have until now, but I’m excited, eight years.”
