'I was furious': Phil Jones launched a sexually charged attack on former Manchester United manager Ralf Rangnick who 'humiliated' him

Phil Jones has recalled the time he criticised former Manchester United interim manager Ralf Rangnick for sacking him from Liverpool.

He 32 years oldwho left Old Trafford last year, has been plagued by numerous setbacks throughout his career, suffering 23 injuries in total.

Once considered the best Red Devils team 'The best player of all time' by Sir Alex Ferguson following his transfer from Blackburn in 2011, Jones' injury hell and subsequent inconsistent form in his final years at the club failed to see him reach the heights expected of him.

In his last four seasons in the Theatre of dreamsJones was limited to just 13 appearances in all competitions, with only six of those outings coming in the Premier League.

Out of favor under Rangnick In the 2021/22 campaign, the German selected Jones as his starter when he visited title-chasing Liverpool in April, in just his second top-flight game of the season.

And despite making no mistake, Jones was taken off the field at half-time with United trailing 2-0 in a 4-0 final defeat in Anfield.

He led the England international with 27 caps, which retired last monthfurious with Rangnick, where he proceeded to unleash a sexually charged tirade on him in the locker room.

The 2013 Premier League champion said in the High performance podcast: “I've never lost my mind in a locker room and I've never been emotional enough to lose myself in a locker room.

“And I think that was the only time in my career where I completely lost my mind. I was furious. Furious. Because he had humiliated me.

“He humiliated me in front of the Anfield crowd, in front of fearsome opponents, in front of the fans, in front of my family and in front of the players.

“We were losing 2-0 at half-time, we didn't play very well, I don't think we had a shot on goal in the first half. Nothing was going our way. And the truth is that I had done well in the game.

“Considering where I'd been, what I'd been going through, knee-wise and injuries-wise.

“I look back and I can point out anything. I didn't lose the ball, I was calm under pressure. I'm not saying I was exceptional, but I definitely didn't deserve to come off at half-time.

“There were much worse players on the pitch that day. I was the easiest to eliminate. You're an easy scapegoat.”

He continued: “At half-time I remember Ralf coming on and saying: 'I'm going to make a change, Phil is going off'.

“I remember the whole locker room was like, 'Is he going to bring Phil in here?'

“I took my boots off, threw them on the ground and said, 'You're kidding me'. Everyone was saying, 'Calm down, calm down'. I get mad now (thinking about it), it really affected me.

“I couldn't understand it. I apologised afterwards and said: 'It wasn't like me, I shouldn't have done that, at that moment it wasn't what was needed in the dressing room', but you can understand that I was very angry.”

Former Tottenham midfielder and talkSPORT co-presenter Jamie O'Hara commented on Jones' substitution at the time, where he admitted that if he were Jones, he would also call up Rangnick.

He told The Sports Bar: “If I was Phil Jones at half-time, I'd dig up dirt on the manager.

“I turn around and say, 'Are you kidding me? Are you dragging me out after 45 minutes? You're putting me in there against Liverpool when you could have put me in against Norwich last week to settle me and give me a game.'

“'You've worked on a formation for four days, we're playing Liverpool and you're putting me next to (Diogo) Dalot, (Harry) Maguire, (Victor) Lindelof and (Aaron) Wan-Bissaka, and you're dragging me off at half-time to make it look like it's my fault?'

“I'd say, 'I'll tell you what, don't bother picking me again, I'll see you outside, see you later, I'm leaving.'”

Jones played twice more under Rangnick (brief appearances off the bench against Chelsea and Brentford) which turned out to be the last games of his professional career.
