Phil Thompson has encouraged David Moyes to seek a new challenge outside West Ham at the end of this season.
He Hammers The manager has faced pressure from sections of the club's fans, despite his team currently occupying seventh place in the Premier League and having reached qualification quarter finals of the Europa League.
Joining Jeff Stelling on the talkSPORT breakfast, the Liverpool legend admitted he struggles to understand fans' criticism of the Scot, given his achievements while in charge of the east London side.
After Stelling outlined moyesCredentials alongside Irons supporter and talkSPORT commentator Bianca Westwood, Thompson argued that calls for the coach's sacking were ridiculous.
In response to Westwood's observation that West Ham could secure back-to-back European titles this year, he asked: “How can we be talking like this and this guy's job is threatened?”
Thompson went on to encourage the 60-year-old to seek a fresh start away from the London Stadium, saying: “If I were David Moyes, I'd leave at the end of the season.
“I would leave because David has a high value among other clubs and could join many football clubs.”
The former European Cup champion added that the coach should not tolerate the continuous complaints from some of the club's faithful.
Thompson went on to say: “With West Ham, I feel like with the fans, he's just two defeats away from them wanting him to leave again.
“I went like this (raised my hands) and said 'I've done my job' and he can go somewhere else.”
While Westwood was quick to point out that the majority of supporters have no problem with Moyes, another supporter of the club soon took issue with his views.
West Ham fan Steve called Breakfast Show later in the morning to criticize the former Manchester United and Everton manager for his tactical decisions in his team's recent match. 1-1 draw with Aston Villa.
Comparing the weekend performance to his previous 5-0 Europa League victory Of Freiburg, Steve observed: “We played an attacking team on Thursday night and I said, 'I bet they won't play with the same team or in the same way on Sunday.'
“He made me feel bad during the first half. We go out, we play, we score. Beautiful, wonderful.
The Hammers fan then lashed out at Moyes, adding: “What happens in the second half? We take out Antonio, who was causing havoc, I might add, and then he brings in a defender.
“Talk about 'let's keep what we've got'! Why don't we go out and beat them up? And that's all he does! He doesn't have a fighting bone in his body, that moron!”
The show's presenters attempted to reason with the disgruntled fan, with Thompson arguing that the club could be in trouble if Moyes, who led the club to Europa Conference League glory last year.
He asked: “(If) Moyesey isn't there and things go wrong, how would you react next season if he wasn't there and then you were fighting relegation again?”
But Steve refused to accept Thompson's argument and continued to criticize the manager.
Steve said: “That's what we're used to, we're not used to success. We have achieved some success and now we want to go further.
“And we're not going to do it with the dinosaur, the dinosaur that has one eye.”
