Injury concerns for Bayer Leverkusen’s Florian Wirtz in Germany clash

On Monday evening, Germany overcame The Netherlands 1-0 at the Allianz Arena, courtesy of a Jamie Lewelling strike shortly after the hour mark.

However, while the result saw Die Nationalmannschaft go five points clear at the top of Group A3 in the UEFA Nations League, it was not all positive for Julian Nagelsmann’s side.

Bayer Leverkusen midfielder Florian Wirtz was forced off during the interval having sustained an injury in the first half.

Speaking after the final whistle, Nagelsmann commented on the 21-year-old’s condition:

“Flo will get the diagnosis here tomorrow. He had a bit of a medial ligament problem and got stuck in the grass. We hope it’s nothing serious.”

For Germany, with them sitting comfortably at the top of their Nations League group and with no major tournament on the horizon, this is not the most damaging news.

Nevertheless, for Leverkusen, Wirtz’s diagnosis could have a significant effect on their campaign.

The 21-year-old has been their key player so far this season, collecting six goals and one assist in ten appearances in all competitions.

With Die Werkself struggling to replicate their form from last season, should they lose Wirtz for a lengthy period of time, it could put their campaign in jeopardy.

Even in the short term, Xabi Alonso’s side face second-place Eintracht Frankfurt on Saturday, which would offer Die Adler serious hope heading into the clash.
