Ipswich have an agreement in principle with Manchester City to sign Kalvin Phillips on loan, talkSPORT understands.
Fulham and Everton They had also been considered as possible destinations for the 28-year-old, but the newly promoted club won the race.
The former England international is desperate to rebuild his career after a difficult spell at Manchester City.
Phillips joined Manchester City in July 2022 on a six-year contract for £42.5m.
Despite the initial positive impact, upon his return from the World Cup in December 2022, the coach Pep Guardiola said Phillips was overweight, a few months later Guardiola apologized.
He joined West Ham on a six-month loan in January but struggled for fitness and form and any permanent return was ruled out.
His loan spell hit rock bottom in March during a 4-3 away defeat to Newcastle United.
The Hammers led 3-1 when Phillips gave away a penalty shortly after coming on as a substitute.
He was seen after the match giving the middle finger to West Ham Fans hurled insults at him.
A fresh start at newly promoted Ipswich is likely to be welcomed by Phillips.
Phillips, who was an unused substitute last weekend Community shield triumph, had even been deployed in defense to get minutes during the preseason.
“He is a central midfielder, but I have said many times that Kalvin likes to see the whole game in front of him,” Guardiola said.
“When he is in the middle surrounded by players, it is a bit difficult for him, but he helped us a lot in the last matches of the tour. You should have seen him before. He has regained his confidence.”
Guardiola previously admitted: “I know that Kalvin when he has the ball and can see the whole field in front of him is a really good player. When he has small spaces there are more problems.”
“That's why, despite the problems we have, he makes an incredible effort in his position. He's confident with the ball and helps us a lot.”
