Ipswich's Sam Morsy scores in added time to frustrate Southampton | Premier League

Sam Morsy scored a dramatic equaliser in added time as Ipswich earned a draw against fellow promoted side. Southampton.

Saints were on the verge of securing their first top-flight win of the season following 18-year-old youth product Tyler Dibling's first career goal, but Morsy levelled the scores five minutes into the 90th minute with a deflected shot from the edge of the area. Both teams remain winless in the league after five games since promotion from the Championship.

“I'm really angry and frustrated that we couldn't finish the game,” Southampton manager Russell Martin said.

“There were a lot of good things, but the overriding feeling is one of disappointment. We made some fundamental mistakes that we hadn’t made in training, so it has to be down to anxiety.

“It was our best performance, but it wasn’t enough to get the win, so I have the right to be angry and upset.”

Cameron Archer squandered two golden chances, including a shot against the post, to give the hosts space while Aaron Ramsdale made superb saves to prevent Omari Hutchinson and George Hirst from levelling before the final twist.

Ipswich arrived on the back of back-to-back draws and having won the double against Southampton last season. Manchester City loanee Kalvin Phillips was replaced by Jens Cajuste in midfield due to a thigh injury, while Saints’ four changes included a first league start of the season for Adam Lallana, who quickly justified his selection by charmingly assisting a team-mate twice his age. The 36-year-old split open the away defence with an exquisite through ball, leaving Dibling to take a couple of touches and happily curl a goal past Arijanet Muric.

Despite the early setback, Ipswich were the bigger threat from the start. Sammie Szmodics sent a half-volley wide and then missed a header from point-blank range, albeit from offside.

Southampton survived more nervy moments but should have extended their lead in the 27th minute. Archer was released by Dibling and, having kept Jacob Greaves and Dara O'Shea at bay, he eluded goalkeeper Muric but the ball crashed off the base of the left-hand post.

Ipswich manager Kieran McKenna was said to have been frustrated to have been trailing at the break. Ramsdale saved shots from Leif Davis and O'Shea before making a spectacular save to deflect Hutchinson's powerful shot deep into added time.

Archer, who was guilty of a crucial missed penalty in last Saturday's 3-0 defeat to Manchester United, failed to capitalise on another excellent chance early in the second half, spearing straight at Muric after again escaping O'Shea and Greaves.

Ipswich were struggling to regain the attacking spirit they showed in the first half. Substitute Jack Taylor sparked a mass brawl with a poorly timed tackle during a bad-tempered period that disrupted the flow of the match.

Ipswich looked destined to return home empty-handed after Ramsdale deflected a header from Hirst. However, from the resulting corner, the partially cleared ball found its way to Morsy and his shot deflected off Joe Aribo into the top left corner.

“It was a fantastic way to finish the game,” McKenna said. “It’s great that the captain stepped up, scored well and scored the goal in front of the away fans to get a point.”

“We are moving in the right direction. It's about continuing to develop as a team, continuing to improve.”
