“It's an insult to Klopp”: Liverpool's theory about Arne Slot and Darwin Núñez, branded disrespectful
Jeff Stelling has branded theories that Arne Slot could be a better choice as manager for Liverpool striker Darwin Nunez as “insulting”.
The slot was confirmed as new Liverpool manager on Monday, replacing Jurgen Klopp after a brilliant nine-year spell at Anfield.
Nunez became the Reds' record signing in 2022 when Klopp spent a whopping £85m on the Uruguayan hitman.
Despite showing flashes of quality, Núñez has struggled to regain the form that made him one of Europe's most promising forwards during his time at Benfica.
The 24-year-old has scored 18 goals in 54 appearances in all competitions this season but has been criticized for missing a number of golden opportunities.
A report on Tuesday suggested that Nunez could find solace with the incoming Slot, due to the Dutchman's attention to small details.
It was his meticulousness that made Mexican striker Santiago Giménez a huge success during their time together at Feyenoord.
Gimenez recorded 49 goals in 86 games for Slot and helped lead the Rotterdam club to the Eredivisie title in 2023 and the Dutch Cup this season.
But Stelling disputed the idea that Slot would be a better fit for the Uruguayan, calling him disrespectful of the outgoing Liverpool manager.
“Jürgen Klopp doesn't want details?” he said. talkSPORT breakfast host Stelling. “I think it's an insult to Klopp. If you only looked at the basis of the coaches and who brought out the best in the players, you would put Klopp at the top and Slot somewhere below him.
“Now that may change as the years go by, but to say that his attention to detail would bring out the best in Darwin Núñez, I think is a bit disrespectful towards Jurgen Klopp.”
“Slot will come with great recommendations and rightly so, but getting a player to score 140 goals in 23 games against Go Ahead Eagles, Heerenveen and Heracles, it is not the same as scoring goals in the Premier League.”
Forest ranger Legend Ally McCoist praised Nunez's all-around game, but admits his finishing needs to improve quickly.
“I think it's a final issue with Nunez,” the former Scotland striker said.
“His all-around game is good. It's a bit like (Nicolas) JacksonI don't think they are the finished article in terms of finish.
“I think both will score a good percentage of goals and both will improve their finishing level.”
