'It's over': Liverpool legend says David Coote will never referee again after insulting club and Jurgen Klopp
Danny Murphy says David Coote will never referee a Premier League match again after video showed him making derogatory comments about Liverpool and Jurgen Klopp.
The English referee has been suspended after video footage emerged appearing to show him marking Liverpool 'sand Jurgen Klopp a 'fucking German'.
As a result, Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL), the body responsible for supervising match officials, launched an investigation after the video went viral this week.
The PGMOL said in a statement on Monday: “David Coote has been suspended with immediate effect pending a full investigation. “PGMOL will not comment further until the process is completed.”
talkSPORT understands Coote has accepted the video is genuine and claims it was recorded several years ago.
Former Liverpool star Murphy spoke about the incident on talkSPORT alongside journalist Darren Lewis and was asked how he would have felt as a player.
He said: “I would be much more offended, angry and quick to blame and rightly so as a player, because you're thinking, wait, some of the games I've played and questioning the integrity of their intentions.” Because of his dislike of the manager?
“Does that mean we missed something? All those things would have been running through my head.
“I think a lot of players would be really furious.
“An older self now tries to see the most realistic situation and the good in some, not the good in someone, but the best version of someone, and thinks that someone has made a mistake, saying stupid things and actually didn't let it go. . to interfere with his work and his profession and his clearer self as the months and years passed.
“That would be a more complete and mature view I would take now and I hope I'm not so cynical about my views. “I was much more cynical when I was younger.”
Lewis said: “If you were a player in a dressing room you would think very differently.
“There are hundreds of players in Premier League dressing rooms right now who will be watching this story and thousands of fans who are making their own statements on social media as we speak.
Murphy said to this: “That is why he will be punished and will not referee again. It's over.
They have nowhere to go. It's over. It's over. It's over. “You can’t referee there.”
In the video, which has been viewed millions of times on social media, an unknown individual asked Coote what he thought about Liverpool, and he replied: “Liverpool were shit.”
Pressed for his opinion of Klopp, he then comments: “(Klopp is a) c***, absolute c***.
“Apart from punching me with my right hand when I was refereeing them against Burnley in the running of the bulls, he accused me of lying and then punched me with his forehand.
“I have no interest in talking to someone who is fucking arrogant. So I try my best not to talk to him.
“(James) Milner is fine, I get along with him. You can see me there with a 'mask' on. But my God, German, screw me.”
Another video shown appears to show Coote telling his acquaintance that his shocking thoughts about Klopp must not be circulated.
He commented: “Just to be clear, that damn video can't go anywhere, I'm serious.”
Also responding to the video, Jamie O'Hara and Jason Cundy They first expressed sympathy for what Coote was going through on a personal level.
speaking in The sports barO'Hara said: “David, David, it's been a bit stinky in there, hasn't it?
“First of all, whoever posted that video is an absolute expert at taking a man down.
“We've all said stupid things and he's a very stupid kid saying it on camera, but we don't know what kind of context it's in and what mood he was in at the time, so I feel a little sorry for him as being human”. level because he will be going through some bad times right now and I feel that for him.
“But you can't get past the fact that he's been a stupid man.”
Cundy responded: “That's an understatement.
“We know it was a long time ago because it talks about face masks and social distancing, so it will be 2020 or 2021, but it's uncomfortable to watch for a number of reasons.
“Look, he hasn't killed anyone but they are going to hang him because we know how football fans can be when a decision is not the one we want.
“Gambling in our country should not be under the scrutiny it is now for being corrupt; I don't want to believe there is corruption there.
“We've all done it, it just so happens that it can't be filmed and you can't be caught saying this, but I don't feel comfortable because the integrity of the game has to be maintained at the highest level.
“Unfortunately he has let that aspect down and as football fans I don't want that in my game.
“He will lose his job. I don't see a world in which I continue refereeing in this country. I said before that I wouldn't be surprised if he ended up in Saudi Arabia at some point because we've seen Mark Clattenburg and other referees do this.
“On a human level, I feel very sorry for him. “You must be in a very dark place right now because this is going to happen all over the world, but it is unacceptable.”
Dermot Gallagher also joined O'Hara and Cundy and said Cootes will have the chance to give his side of the story, saying: “I don't know what's going to happen, I know as much as you do.
“Someone alerted me to the video after it was posted and sent me a text message and then I heard that the PGMOL had made a statement and suspended it pending an investigation that they have to do.
“There is a process they have to go through and only when the investigation is completed will the outcome be known.”
When asked what will happen, Gallagher said: “It's hard for me to say because I've never been involved in anything like this in my life.
“I suppose the first thing they will have to do is authenticate that the video is real or AI, so to speak, but the investigation will depend on several things and you will have to talk to your bosses.
“They will seek justice, he has to be able to state his case and explain himself and that will play out how they see it, but the only problem referees have in life is that they are subject to spectators seeing things through the prism . of the colors of their club and all the fans remember every decision that they perceive goes against them.”
