'It's really not good': Martin O'Neill recalls Roy Keane's hilarious response to young fans during golf nightmare
It's fair to say that Roy Keane doesn't like losing.
He manchester united The legend enjoyed a decorated career, which included seven Premier League titles, as well as Champions League and FA Cup glory, and earned a reputation as one of football's fiercest competitors.
And off the field, obviously, this doesn't differ much, as his former colleague claims Martin O'Neill hilariously recalled how a furious Keane I dealt with falling behind in a round of golf.
Keane served as O'Neill's assistant during his time as Republic of Ireland manager between 2013 and 2018, a period the former Red Devils captain has since described as the “highlight” of his career.
And although the Irishman reflects fondly on that moment, there is one moment he may not be so eager to remember.
Appearing in 'The Overlap'Stay with football' Alongside Keane, O'Neill recounted the former midfielder's struggles during a team golf day as part of Ireland's preparation.
He recalled: “So we played this particular night and Roy is using a 7-iron.
“And he's obviously mad: It's a par three, he's (on his) seventh shot and he's halfway down the fairway.”
Things then went from bad to worse for Keane, when he was spotted by two young fans who were eager for an autograph.
O'Neill continued: “And these two young men, (the golf course) is at our hotel. It is close to the attached golf course.
“And the two boys are on the outskirts on bicycles, they are about 14 or 15 years old.
'You can see Roy back there, and the two lads are right next to me and they say, 'Hello sir, is that Roy Keane over there?'
“And I said, 'Yes, yes, it is.' And they said, 'Do you think we could get his autograph?'”
Aware of Keane's irascible character, O'Neill advised the two young supporters to wait for his form to improve.
He continued: “I said, 'It's not a good time, it's really not good.'
“If you watch him and if he hits a decent shot, maybe you should continue toward the green, which he won't make it to! Let's go up to the green and see how we go.” of that.'
“Then the two kids get back on the bike and ride up to the green, and Roy finally makes it to the green. And the two guys (say), 'Roy, Roy, can we get your autograph?'
O'Neill later left the co-hosts Gary Neville, Ian Wright and Jill Scott He became nervous when he revealed his former assistant's hilarious response: “Fuck you!”
A timid Keane then attempted to protest his innocence, saying: “I don't think he swore.”
But this didn't stop O'Neill from continuing to joke about the incident.
Laughing, the first Villa Aston The boss joked: “I met the two guys last year.
“They just got out of a psychiatric ward. They have mental scars.”
