Jadon Sancho ends his turbulent Manchester United career by completing his transfer to Chelsea the day after deadline day
Jadon Sancho has finally joined Chelsea in one of the biggest (and most recent) transfers of the final day of the transfer window.
The forward has changed Manchester United to Stamford Bridge on a season-long loan deal with an obligation to make the move permanent for £25m, a deal that was announced almost 24 hours after the window closed.
Juventus had been the team most likely to offer Sancho an escape route from his nightmare at Old Trafford, however, it is Chelsea who have managed to reach an agreement.
Sancho will now hope to revive his career after three frustrating years with the Red Devils.
Speaking to Chelsea's official website, Sancho said: “I'm really excited to be here. London is where I grew up and I'm happy to be back.
“The manager told me about the project and, for a young player, it's exciting. Hopefully I can bring goals and assists to the Bridge.”
He could make his debut for the Blues against Bournemouth after the international break.
Manchester United confirmed the news in a brief statement: “Manchester United striker Jadon Sancho has joined Chelsea on loan for the remainder of the season.
“The 24-year-old England international sealed his transfer on the final day of the transfer window, with the announcement coming on Saturday evening.
“Sancho returned to United earlier this summer after a half-season loan spell at his former club Borussia Dortmund in Germany.
“He will now join Enzo Maresca's Blues team at Stamford Bridge.
“We wish Jadon good luck for the upcoming campaign.”
The 24-year-old joined United from Borussia Dortmund in the summer of 2021 for a fee of £73m, but has struggled to live up to expectations.
After fighting with Erik the HagSancho rejoined Dortmund in January this year and scored three goals to help the German side on their way to the Champions League final.
Sancho returned to United this summer and Ten Hag claimed the winger would be part of their plans once again.
He said: “We have drawn the line.
“Manchester United need good players and Jadon is one of them. We have drawn that line and we will move on.”
Sancho played a role in the Community Shield defeat to Manchester City, where he missed his penalty in the shoot-out.
But he has not played for United since, leading to talk of a possible exit before the window closed.
In 83 appearances for the Red Devils, Sancho scored 12 goals and provided six assists; his last goal came in May 2023.
