James Rodriguez has joined Mexican side Club Leon after leaving Rayo Vallecano earlier this month.

The 33-year-old had his contract terminated at Rayo on January 6, having made just seven appearances for the Spanish side.

A statement from the La Liga club confirmed on Monday that “Rayo Vallecano and Club Leon have reached an agreement for the transfer of James Rodríguez”.

The Mexican club paid their Spanish counterparts a fee worth less than €1million to sign the Colombia international.

The playmaker began his career at Envigado in Colombia before joining Argentina’s Banfield. After spells with Porto and Monaco, the Colombian won the Golden Boot at the 2014 World Cup and signed for Real Madrid later that summer.

Rodriguez played 125 times for Madrid before spending two seasons on loan at Bayern Munich and later joining Everton in 2020, with Carlo Ancelotti his manager at each of the three clubs.

He played 26 times for Everton before penning a two-year deal with Qatari club Al Rayyan in 2021. He joined Olympiakos in 2022 before moving to Sao Paulo the following year and Rayo in the summer of 2024.

Rodriguez, who has scored 29 goals in 112 caps for Colombia, helped the nation reach the 2014 World Cup quarter-final stage and the final of the 2024 Copa America, which they lost to Argentina.
