Aston Villa were reduced to 10 men during the first half of their Boxing Day visit to Newcastle as Jhon Duran was deemed to have intentionally stamped on Fabian Schar.
The controversial moment came as Duran attempted to latch on to a through ball with Villa already 1-0 down thanks to a second minute strike from Anthony Gordon.
Schar slid in to clear the ball to safety, leaving himself beneath the Villa striker.
Duran looked to get his feet tussled up before making contact with his studs on three separate occasions.
Fans were divided over whether he meant to do so but the referee brandished the red card for violent conduct, which was confirmed by VAR.
Duran was clearly far from impressed with the decision as he waited for the VAR ruling and let out his anger as it was revealed.
The Colombian kicked a water bottle in disgust before being guided down the tunnel, much to the enjoyment of the home supporters.
Villa’s day went from bad to worse as Alexander Isak doubled the Magpies’ lead in the second half.
