But Heitinga saw an opportunity to launch a thinly veiled criticism of the Toffees and their poor defensive line this season.

“It's like Everton“The defence,” Heitinga said of the inanimate mannequins as he passed the ball to Nunez, only for the Uruguayan to hit the crossbar with his shot.

In their first three Premier League games, Everton have lost every game and have conceded 10 goals, the most in the league.

Sean DycheThe England team also entered the international break after suffering a painful defeat at Goodison Park against Bournemouth in which they were 2-0 up for 86 minutes, only to lose 3-2.

Despite their league struggles, Everton have bragging rights in the Merseyside derby after beating Liverpool 2-0 in April thanks to goals from Jarrad Branthwaite and Dominic Calvert-Lewin.

It was, however, a brutal critique from Heitinga given he made 140 appearances for Everton over his five-and-a-half years at the club.

During that time, Everton never finished lower than eighth in the table and even reached the semi-final of the FA Cup in the 2011–12 season.

Despite having represented Everton in his playing days, Heitinga crossed the border into the city in July when he was appointed to new Reds boss Arne Slot's staff as assistant coach in July.

Before moving to Liverpool, Heitinga worked as an assistant David Moyes in West Ham United for the 2023-24 season.

But now he is using his experience to help Slot at Melwood and so far it has paid off.
