Jose Mourinho angered the Chelsea star by threatening to replace him with a former Manchester United player
Jose Mourinho was not afraid to get on the wrong side of his players and handed out plenty of threats in training at Chelsea.
That's according to Gary Cahill, who has revealed how the Portuguese infuriated him during his trophy-laden spell at Stamford Bridge.
The center joined The blues from Bolton in January 2012 and won the Premier League with Mourinho Three years later.
Cahill He was partnered at the back by John Terry, who previously told John Obi Mikel about a case of his legendary manager's anger.
Terry revealed how Mourinho threatened to sign The then star of Real Madrid Rafael Varane and 'another top defender' to replace their centre-backs after they botched a training exercise.
And when they asked him in Mikel Obi One's Podcast If he recalls, he confirmed that he did so and explained how he reacted to it.
“I was stunned,” said the future Chelsea captain. “I was shocked, to be honest, I was really pissed off.”
“But you know what, that was him, wasn't it? Mind games, he was smart with that kind of stuff.
“He knew he would get a reaction, especially because of my character and John's, he knew he would get a reaction and he did. I was furious.”
When Terry spoke about the incident, he added further detail when he said: “I remember we won the league one year at Chelsea and Gary Cahill and I came back in pre-season.
“At the time we didn't realise why he had done it, but we had signed some important new players and we did this possession game where Gaz and I played the ball into midfield. There's no space to play into midfield, but you have to go through midfield to get to the other third.
“Gaz and I are feeding him, they are intercepting him, we are conceding goals and he (Mourinho) has stopped the session. I am the captain, Gaz is the vice-captain and he tells me: 'See you, you can go to hell'.”
“I'm going to sign[Raphael]Varane and another world-class defender and spend £100m and you two can sit on the bench and watch them. Gaz and I were like, 'fuck, we won the league last year'.
“We couldn't believe it. Gaz and I looked at each other and said 'right, let's get this game started'. For the rest of the session Gaz and I just kicked everyone around.
“He then put his arms around me and Gaz as we walked off the pitch and said 'that's why you're my captain and vice-captain'.”
Mourinho did not sign Varane, who joined Chelsea's Premier League rivals Manchester United in 2021 before leaving this summer.
He stayed with Terry and Cahill but left the Blues for a second time at the end of 2015, before the club finished a dismal 12th in the league.
However, the centre-backs redeemed themselves the following season as they were part of Chelsea's title-winning side under Antonio Conte.
Legendary club captain Terry left after the triumph and the armband was passed on to Cahill, who led them to FA Cup and Europa League glory.
Cahill left in 2019 after making 290 appearances for Chelsea in all competitions, winning two Premier League titles, the Champions League, two Europa Leagues, the FA Cup and the League Cup.
