According the guardianMourinho believes his best chance of returning to the Premier League would be through Newcastle and is attentive to the evolution of the club.
The Portuguese coach has only been with Turkish side Fenerbahce since last summer, and his team is currently third in the Super Lig.
But he recently expressed his displeasure in no uncertain terms following his team's 3-2 victory over Trabzonspor in a remarkable rant which included him complaining that the league “smells bad.”
Mourinho He has previously had two managerial spells in charge of Chelsea, where he won the Premier League three times, as well as separate spells at Manchester United and Tottenham.
When Fenerbahce faced his former club Man United in the Europa League last month, Mourinho made a cheeky offer of his own services to Premier League clubs at the bottom of the table after the match, indicating his desire to return to England.
Mourinho also met Newcastle president Yasir al-Rumayyan in March at the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix in a social setting, but The Guardian has said the relationship has remained.
The 61-year-old is also reported to have been in contact with intermediaries and asked to be informed about any changes at Newcastle.
Mourinho has always been in love with St James' Park due to his work as a translator for Sir Bobby Robson at Sporting Lisbon and Porto, and then as an assistant at Barcelona.
The Portuguese has often referred to Newcastle as “Mr Robson's club” and appears to have an emotional connection.
The Magpies had a mixed start to the season – they had been on a run that had seen them winless in five games before their recent meeting with Arsenal.
However, a 1-0 win over the Gunners at St James' Park, as well as a League Cup last 16 victory over Chelsea, have revived their fortunes.
However, they face a tough game against top-flight Nottingham Forest on Sunday 10 November.
However, Howe still does not appear to be in danger of losing his job, especially considering how he has elevated Newcastle from relegation contenders to top-flight stability.
While it lost two key allies with the departures of directors Amanda Staveley and Mehrdad Ghodoussi last summer, it has considerable credit in the bank.
November 8, 2024 marks exactly three years since Howe was appointed at Newcastle, and the 46-year-old has made it clear that he is very happy with the role he holds.
“It feels good to still be here because when you arrive you're never sure how things are going to go,” he said before the game against Forest.
“You arrive with the best intentions, many dreams and many emotions because, as you say, there is uncertainty and some insecurities because you enter the unknown.
“At that time many challenges awaited us, the first priority of course was to stay in the league, it was the only thing that consumed me at that time.
“We worked a lot trying to make certain changes, but we also tried to make the best of what was already here.”
“When you look back on the three years as a whole, I think of a lot of positive memories, good feelings and I'm very happy with how it's gone.
“I'm very excited to be sitting in the position and still dreaming about what lies ahead.”
