Sky Germany reports that Bayern Munich midfielder Joshua Kimmich is currently the hot favourite to replace Ilkay Gündogan as Germany captain.

Yesterday, it was announced that captain Gündogan would retire from international football following Germany’s elimination at the quarter-final stage of EURO 2024.

The midfielder’s departure now leaves a void for a replacement and that will likely be Kimmich. The 29-year-old was the first vice-captain under Gündogan and is by far one of the most experienced players left in the squad having made his debut back in 2016 under Joachim Löw.

The other candidates who were part of Germany’s EURO 2024 squad are central defender Antonio Rüdiger or goalkeeper Marc-André ter Stegen who will likely be the number one for the foreseeable future

Germany’s next international games will be against Hungary on 7th September in Düsseldorf and the Netherlands on September 10th in Amsterdam in the UEFA Nations League. A chance of a minor piece of silverware for the national team will be the focus after a positive EURO 2024 before qualification for the 2026 World Cup begins next year.
