Justin Kluivert creates Premier League history with impressive debut in 67 years, but Andoni Iraola almost stops him
Justin Kluivert became the first player in Premier League history to score a hat-trick from penalties in Bournemouth's 4-2 win over Wolves.
But his manager, Andoni Iraola, was about to prevent it.
kluivert He took two penalties in the first half at Molineux, before scoring the third on the road in the 74th minute.
In doing so, he became the first player in the Premier League's 32-year history to achieve this astonishing feat.
And the Dutchman, son of legendary striker Patrick, also became the first to score a penalty hat-trick in a top-flight match since 1957.
Ken Barnes was the last player to do so in the league during city of manchester against Everton 67 years ago.
Speaking after the match, after hearing about the feat, Kluivert said: “That sounds beautiful. Going into the history books, it's incredible, I'm very happy with that.”
“I coach them (penalties). We have a great goalkeeper with Kepa.
“We tried a few things, the first one I stop and look at the goalkeeper, what is he doing? I change it to the second.
“Then the third one, he doesn't know what I'm going to do. I waited and he chose for me. It's that easy.”
However, Kluivert may never have had the chance to score the third if Iraola had carried out one of his thoughts.
He Bournemouth The manager admitted after the match that he considered taking his winger off the third penalty.
Iraola said: “I don't remember it happening to me before, it must be difficult, especially the last one.
“I wasn't entirely sure about allowing him to take the third.”
“I guess it's difficult, every time you shoot the first one, you give information to the goalkeeper,” he continued.
“You've been preparing during the week, you've had two different approaches in the first two, in the third I wasn't completely sure what I was going to do, but it's been very, very good.
“I guess I wouldn't have been happy (if I had taken away the third penalty), but in the end I have to think about the points.
“I didn't make the decision to say anything. I hoped they would decide the right thing.”
The fact that Iraola saved him from the penalty spot also meant that Kluivert was the first player to score a penalty hat-trick in any competition since Liverpool Cult hero Jan Molby in a League Cup tie against Leicester in 1986.
It wasn't just the Dutchman who created Premier League history in the Midlands.
His teammate Evanilson became the first player to win three penalties in a single match.
There was barely a minute on the clock when Bournemouth were awarded a penalty after a foul on Brazilian striker Toti Gomes.
Kluivert rose to send it into the bottom right corner, before going in the opposite direction in the 17th minute.
Bournemouth's second penalty of the game came thanks to a shot by José Sa. inadvertently eliminating Evanilson after the former Porto star passed the ball to him as the goalkeeper prepared to make a pass.
And it was Sa who committed another penalty in the second half after colliding with the 25-year-old.
This time, Kluivert launched his shot from 12 yards into the bottom right corner to write his name in history.
Kluivert has already scored five goals in the Premier League this season, just two shy of equaling his tally from last season.
Four of his goals came from penalties and he also found the back of the net with a penalty in the 2-0 win over Arsenal in October.
The result lifted Bournemouth to 11th place in the table, just one point behind Newcastle, who are in tenth.
As for the Wolves, they have failed to make it three straight wins and their loss left them in 18th place.
