Italian giants Juventus have expressed interest in signing Fiorentina midfielder Sofyan Amrabat, who is on loan in manchester united this season, according Italian publication Calciomercato.
The Red Devils signed Amrabat last summer on a 12-month loan deal and have the option to make the move permanent at the end of the season for a fee of around £21.4 million.
It is not yet clear whether United plan to exercise that option as Amrabat has not had the best of times on loan in Manchester. But, if Man Utd plan to sign the Moroccan permanently, they could face competition as the report says Juventus are interested in signing the midfielder.
Amrabat represents the long generation of players who rose to fame with their performance in the World Cup. Despite not doing much at club level for Fiorentina, Man Utd thought signing the Moroccan would be a smart investment.
Right now, Erik ten Hag and company. He would be grateful to his stars for the fact that it was a loan signing, and not a permanent one, last summer. However, it didn't come cheap, as United paid a loan rate of around £8.5 millionwhich in your current financial situation is easily avoidable.
A flash in the pan?
The 27-year-old Moroccan midfielder has played 22 times for Man Utd in all competitions this season and has not managed a single goal or assist. Most of his appearances have been made from the bench and he has even had to replace the left back on occasions.
Juventus consider Amrabat as a possible replacement for Adrien Rabiot, should the Frenchman leave the club in the summer. Considering how things have gone so far, it seems unlikely that Man Utd will activate their purchase option.
Kobbie Mainoo's emergence and breakthrough into the first team has been a blessing in disguise for Man Utd and Erik ten Hag this season. The only loser was Sofyan Amrabat. If it weren't for the impressive and almost unstoppable performances of the English U21 team, perhaps the Moroccan would have had more opportunities to prove himself.
At this point, Amrabat in a United shirt seems like a short-lived and expensive dream for the club. The transfer rate is not ideal for a player who has barely appeared but it is what it is. This partnership, which promised stars, has become more of a failed marriage and it is time for United to give Juventus a free run for the midfielder in the summer.
