La Liga round-up: Mallorca all but safe, Villarreal comeback and Athletic Club's Champions League hopes dashed
It was another dramatic day in La Liga, with four action-packed games taking place across Spain. Real Madrid traveled to Granada in their first game as champions, while Athletic Club hosted Osasuna in a Basque derby, Sevilla went to Villarreal, and Mallorca took on Las Palmas at Son Moix.
Athletic Club 2-2 Osasuna
The Athletic Club the hope of securing qualification in the Champions League is hanging by a thread, after a parul 2-2 at home. Hi. It was the Garcias who did the damage to the hosts, with Raul Garcia and Ruben Garcia on the match for Jagoba Arrasate's team at San Mames. However, Los Leones mounted a comeback in the second half, with Inaki Williams and Asier Villalibre netting – the latter doing so in stoppage time to salvage a point.
The result means Atletico Madrid can go eight points clear of fourth-placed Athletic, should they defeat Celta Vigo on Sunday. Osasuna moves to 11th with this very impressive result.
Villarreal 3-2 Sevilla
An incredible meeting took place at the Ceramica on Saturday afternoon, with Villarreal twice coming from behind to defeat Seville. Youssef En-Nesyri had the visitors ahead until the 84th minute, scoring either side of an Alexander Sorloth equaliser, before Yerson Mosquera made it 2-2. The winner came in the 97th minute courtesy of Sorloth, who is now just one goal behind Artem Dovbyk in the Pichichi Trophy race.
This result moves Villarreal above Valencia and into eighth place, although Los Che can take that back on Sunday. Sevilla drops to 13th.
Mallorca 1-0 Las Palmas
The Palms now lost their last eight games in La Liga, with Majorca picking up the three points at Son Moix courtesy of Giovanni Gonzalez. That result ensured the Islanders stay in La Liga, and if Cadiz are defeated by Getafe on Sunday, their safety will be official.
