- Leicester City Vs. Aston Villa – Sat, Aug 31st 2024, 15:00
Aston Villa picked up consecutive away wins in the Premier League thanks to a controlled display at Leicester City.
The away side were the dominant force in the first half, hitting the front when Amadou Onana slid in to finish off a well-worked set piece after 28 minutes.
Jhon Durán came off the bench and guided a superb header into the far corner to double Villa’s lead just past the hour mark.
City rarely troubled Emi Martínez but threatened to mount a comeback when Facundo Buonanotte volleyed home on 73 minutes.
However, Villa held firm to make it two wins from their opening three league outings this season.
Unai Emery opted to hand a Premier League debut to Lamare Bogarde in place of the injured Matty Cash, three years on from his first appearance for the club in an FA Cup tie against Liverpool.
And the visiting Villans threatened inside the opening two minutes when Youri Tielemans – on his return to the club where he won an FA Cup – slipped Ollie Watkins in on goal, with the striker only denied by a glove from Mads Hermansen as he tried to round the ‘keeper.
Twenty minutes passed before the next goalscoring opportunity, and it was created by the tenacity of Morgan Rogers, who blocked a pass before teeing up Watkins.
The striker held off a defender and set himself before firing a low shot across Hermansen, but the goalkeeper produced a superb one-handed stop to palm it wide.
Villa didn’t have to wait much longer to take the lead, striking with a slick set piece that ended with Onana sliding in to convert Jacob Ramsey’s cross.
The pressure continued to be applied by the visitors as Ramsey called Hermansen into another save before Martínez showed smart reactions to tip Caleb Okoli’s effort away ahead of the half-time whistle sounding.
A frenetic start to the second half saw both sides wrestle for control, with the hosts firing a number of efforts off target as they looked to get back on level terms.
But their task became much more difficult when Durán netted with his second touch after coming on as a substitute.
The Colombian rose highest in the box to divert Digne’s cross into the far corner, sparking jubilant scenes in the away end.
Falling two behind triggered Steve Cooper into a trio of changes, one of whom, Buonanotte volleyed them back into the contest when he got onto the end of a loose ball in the box.
Durán sent a fizzing shot at the ‘keeper as Villa looked to reclaim their two-goal advantage, but they did enough to see off the Foxes and pick up a second win from their opening three Premier League matches.
